Kwak Brothers vs Replace Your Mortgage: Who Are the People Behind Each HELOC Strategy?

    11 min read

Short answer: If you've been researching ways to pay off your mortgage faster with a HELOC, you've probably come across both the Kwak Brothers and Replace Your Mortgage on YouTube. The Kwak Brothers are my brother Daniel and me, Sam Kwak. We came to the HELOC payoff strategy as young real estate investors, started teaching it on YouTube in 2017, and later built Accelerated Strategies around it. Replace Your Mortgage is taught by Michael Lush, who came to the same strategy after 17 years in the mortgage industry. We're separate companies with no affiliation.

Both of us teach that the way HELOC interest is calculated can work in a homeowner's favor. But we come from very different backgrounds, and depending on your goals, you may prefer one over the other.

In this article, I'll introduce the people behind each company and give you my best fair comparison of how we teach, using verifiable facts and sources I was able to find.

Daniel and I tell the story of how we got started in real estate in this video:

Full disclosure before you read this

I'm one of the founders of Accelerated Strategies, so in the spirit of transparency, I would recommend working with us. At the same time, every fact about Replace Your Mortgage below links back to its own website or its BBB profile and was last verified in November 2026. Facts can change, and some of this information could be outdated by the time you read it. I'm making no representation or claims on behalf of Replace Your Mortgage, and I strongly recommend you give both companies your own fair research.

    Who are the Kwak Brothers?

Daniel and I grew up in Chicago. We were raised by a pastor who was called to minister to Korean immigrant families there in 1999, and we saw firsthand what language barriers, isolation, and money stress do to a family. That's a big part of why we got curious about how money really works.

I started my first business, a mobile DJ company, in 2012. Not long after, Daniel and I got into real estate investing, and by 2017 we had completed over $5 million in real estate investments. We also wrote a book about it, 0 to 75 Units in One Year.

In early 2016, we came across the accelerated payoff strategy, using a line of credit to pay down a mortgage faster. Honestly, I was a critic at first. We were carrying credit card debt ourselves, so we tested it with expert guidance, and the math held up.

In 2021, we formalized what we'd been teaching into Accelerated Strategies, moving from video courses to 1-on-1 consulting, software, and a community.

How did the Kwak Brothers YouTube channel start?

We started our YouTube channel in 2016, and to be honest, we were terrible at it. We just liked sharing what we were learning. In 2017, I made a video explaining the HELOC mortgage payoff strategy with a few sheets of paper and a marker, and it blew up. That video brought in most of our early subscribers. In 2018, we got serious and started publishing every week, covering real estate investing, mortgage payoff, business credit, and general money topics.

That growth got outside attention too. In January 2021, Money.com profiled the strategy and our channel, calling Daniel and me "perhaps the highest-profile proponents" of it. The same article cautioned that the strategy "only works if you spend less than you earn." I agree, and it's still the first thing I tell people.

Who is Michael Lush of Replace Your Mortgage?

Michael Lush is listed as the CEO and founder of Replace Your University, the company behind Replace Your Mortgage. According to its homepage, he spent 17 years in the mortgage industry before teaching the strategy, and he says, "I didn't create this strategy. I tried to prove it wrong." His company also runs related programs called Replace Your Bank, Replace Your Employer, and Replace Your Dollar.

BBB lists Replace Your University in Franklin, Tennessee, with a business start date of September 1, 2014, and an A+ rating. It also publishes videos on its own YouTube channel, Replace Your University.

So we have something in common: Michael Lush and I both started out as skeptics of this strategy.

What I focus on when I teach

    • The daily interest math. HELOC interest is calculated on your average daily balance, while a typical mortgage is calculated monthly on an amortization schedule. A lot of the criticism of this strategy uses the wrong math, which is why I spend so much time on it. I break it down in HELOC to pay off your mortgage faster: is it a scam?
    • Your numbers come first. My team and I have run thousands of scenarios over the last decade. We teach both the 1st lien HELOC and the 2nd lien HELOC strategies, and we pick the setup your numbers support. A 2nd lien HELOC usually wins on the math, while a 1st lien HELOC can win on convenience, or when your current rate is already high or you want a bigger line for investing.
    • When not to use a HELOC. I'd personally never suggest an 18% HELOC to pay down a 5% mortgage. With a low fixed rate, plain extra payments often make more sense. And if the math doesn't work for you, we tell you upfront. I cover the mistakes I see most in the wrong ways to do the accelerated payoff strategy.
    • Cash flow is the engine. The strategy only works if money is left over each month. No account setup changes that.

    Where do we agree?

More than you might think. Both of us teach that how interest is calculated matters, not just the rate. Both of us say you don't always need to refinance. RYU's FAQ says "Refinancing is not always necessary," and I tell my clients that refinancing can be combined with the strategy, but a refinance on its own is not the strategy. And neither company is a lender. RYU's client agreement says it "is not a lending institution," and Accelerated Strategies is not a bank or a lender either.

Both programs also offer a private community of clients, 1-on-1 coaching, video lessons, and bank recommendations. So yes, Replace Your Mortgage is a legit company teaching a legitimate strategy. The differences come down to who is teaching you, the tools you get, and where you want to go after your mortgage is paid down.

What makes the Kwak Brothers and Accelerated Strategies different?

First, the reviews. At the time of this article, Accelerated Strategies has over 425 reviews on Trustpilot, and they're overwhelmingly positive. You can read them here: https://www.trustpilot.com/review/acceleratedstrategies.com. Replace Your University has just over 52 reviews on Trustpilot at the time of this article: https://www.trustpilot.com/review/replaceyouruniversity.com. On sheer number of positive reviews, Accelerated Strategies has significantly more.

Second, the software. When you work with us, you get our Solvit Money Tracking software and mobile app. You can securely connect your real mortgage and HELOC accounts, and Solvit tracks your balances, transactions, and interest costs. It estimates the interest and time you've saved so far, and tells you whether you're on track, off track, or ahead of your plan. That gives you both the confidence and the clarity to know your plan is actually working. At the time of writing, I couldn't find verifiable information on whether Replace Your Mortgage offers a similar tool, so check with them directly.

Third, a real coach. You get a 1:1 coach assigned to you when you enroll. Your coach builds a plan around your numbers, suggests HELOC lenders that fit that plan, and makes sure the right tool is in place before you start.

Fourth, where you go next. Because Daniel and I came to this as real estate investors, paying off your mortgage is only one part of what we teach. Accelerated Strategies also offers pathways into real estate investing, life insurance strategies, and estate planning. So if you want to build monthly cash flow and wealth after your debt is handled, we can give you a plan and a path toward those goals.

Which one is right for you?

I'm biased, and I'd recommend Accelerated Strategies. But I also want you to do your own homework. Here's what I'd suggest:

    • Read the reviews and the complaints. See what other homeowners like you are saying about each company on BBB and Trustpilot, including us.
    • Watch the free content. Our YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/c/thekwakbrothers) has years of free lessons, so you'll get a good sense of how Daniel and I teach before you pay anyone.
    • Talk to both companies. Schedule a call with Replace Your Mortgage and with us, and weigh your options directly. You can schedule a free 30 minute call with my team here: https://acceleratedstrategies.com/consulting

    Frequently asked questions

Who are the Kwak Brothers? We're brothers Sam and Daniel Kwak, real estate investors and the founders of Accelerated Strategies. We've been teaching the HELOC mortgage payoff strategy on YouTube since 2017.

Are the Kwak Brothers part of Replace Your Mortgage? No. Accelerated Strategies and Replace Your University are separate companies with no affiliation.

Who is Michael Lush? Michael Lush is listed as the CEO and founder of Replace Your University, the company behind Replace Your Mortgage. Its homepage says he spent 17 years in the mortgage industry.

Is the Kwak Brothers HELOC strategy the same as Replace Your Mortgage? The core idea is the same: use a line of credit and your cash flow to lower the interest you pay. The difference is in the people, the coaching, and the tools. We model both 1st lien and 2nd lien setups for every client, and we add tracking software and pathways into real estate investing and wealth building.

Are the Kwak Brothers lenders? No. Accelerated Strategies is not a bank or a lender. However, individual team members and staff may be licensed mortgage professionals.

Do I need to pay for a program at all? No. You can learn the concept and run the numbers for free on our YouTube channel. A program makes sense if you want hands-on help, tools, certainty, relational coaching, and accountability. Just like filing taxes, changing your oil, or doing home repairs, you can do it yourself. But the do it yourself approach always comes with more risk than working with trained professionals.
